Jasper Johns colorful Alphabet

Jasper Johns painting of the alphabet
1st graders started the year with making a colorful crayon watercolor resist of Jasper Johns alphabet. We talked about (more like brushed up on & reviewed) how to properly use watercolor, watercolor brushes, and watercolor techniques. It's all about the water! That's what it's called 'watercolor'. First we went through

student work
the entire alpahbet alternating different colors of crayon, tracing over our letters. Pressing hard! Then it was time to use wet on wet watercolor technique, again alternating colors and RINSING inbetween! Yay clean watercolor pans!

Some most impressive art in the works. Students kept changing colors of crayon and watercolor.
